Service to many, Lead to Greatness.

Many years ago my mentor and father said this to us; “If you are given a cup, wash it cleaner than ever before cleaned”. He also taught us, where much is given – much shall be required. And every December at the Kenya coast – holiday camp, for as long as he lived, he taught more than 7000 of us over the years an ancient Christmas carol song – Good King Wenceslas ,and the last lines of the last verse were – Therefore, Christian/Muslim men, be sure, Wealth or rank possessing, Ye who now will bless the poor shall yourselves find blessing I look at the years passed and it saddens me that most people do not get it and we do not want to know.

The world defines greatness in terms of power, possessions, prestige, and position. If you can demand service from others, you've arrived. In our self-serving culture with its ‘me-first’ mentality, acting like a servant is not a popular concept. Thousands of books have been written on leadership, but very few on servanthood. Everyone wants to lead; no one wants to be a servant. We would rather be generals than privates. Even Christians want to be "servant-leaders," not just plain servants. But to be like Jesus is to be a servant. That's what he called himself. Your servant's heart will reveal your maturity. No special talent or gift is required to stay after a meeting to pick up trash or stack chairs. Anyone can be a servant. All it requires is character. How can you know if you have the heart of a servant? It is written that, Jesus said, "You can tell what they are by what they do" (Matthew 7:16). Help people with problems. Your problems disappear.

The key to greatness, the Master Teacher taught, is Find a way to serve the many, for service to many leads to greatness. Geoffrey Griffin is a great soul, for he served thousands of us selflessly. I will always celebrate him. I’m what I’m because he was.
